In March of 2012, Canon U.S.A. Inc. celebrated its 25th anniversary of the launch of its first EOS SLR – the EOS 650 along with the introduction of three interchangeable EF lenses. Furthermore, in April of this year, six Canon DSLR products received the “Best Product 2012” awards in Europe from theTechnical Image Press Association (TIPA), including:
- “Best DSLR Professional in 2012” – EOS-1D X
- “Best Professional DSLR Lens in 2012″ – EF8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM
- “Best Video DSLR in 2012” – EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera
- “Best Expert Compact Camera in 2012″ — PowerShot G1 X compact digital camera
- “Best Professional Video Camera in 2012” – EOS C300 digital cinema camera
- “Best Multifunction Photo Printer in 2012″ — PIXMA MG8250 inkjet printer
Since 1987, Canon has widened its DSLR product base, and this year of 2012 is no exception.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III

In response to the growing needs of advanced amateur/professional photographers and videographers, Canon released the greatly anticipated EOS 5D Mark III full-frame camera. Canon designed the 5D Mark III for a variety of shooting environments, including low light conditions, and has included several improved and advanced features. The 5D Mark III shares some of the technologies of the Canon EOS-1D X, including faster data processing capabilities and an improved auto-focus (AF) system. For the variety of weather conditions experienced by sports, wildlife and landscape photographers, Canon improved the 5D Mark III’s weather resistance. To address the specific needs of wedding photographers, the 5D Mark III has the capacity to save images in M-RAW and S-RAW file formats. These file formats require less space, allowing wedding photographers to shoot more photos on location and complete post-processing in less time. While smaller than normal RAW files, the M-RAW and S-RAW formats do not sacrifice the critical highlight and shadow details found in normal RAW files, and these file formats retain a full field-of-view (FOV) without cropping the image. The 5D Mark III’s improved AF system benefits still photographers, while the in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) mode allows HDR photographers to combine up to seven exposures with exposure compensation of +/-5 EV. Canon designed the 5D Mark III with an expanded ISO range, offering studio and landscape photographers with the option of ISO 50, while law enforcement, government and forensics photographers have two additional ISO settings in the upper range.

Canon also included improved features for those who shoot HD video. These improvements resulted in the 5D Mark III being honored as the “Best Video DSLR in 2012″ by TIPA. The enhanced video features of the 5D Mark III are aimed at professionals working in cinematography, television production, documentary filmmaking, and event videography. For these professionals, the 5D Mark III provides better noise reduction (NR) and longer recording times. The camera’s 1080p full high definition (HD) capabilities provide more flexibility and options for capturing video and decreases post-processing times. Canon has also improved the video quality, included a built-in headphone jack and a wind filter on the microphone.

Named the “Best DSLR Professional in 2012″ by TIPA, the EOS-1D X is designed for professional photojournalists, nature and wildlife photographers, sports photographers, film and television videographers and wedding/event photographers and videographers. Its fast 12fps shooting speed meets the requirements of professional sports and wildlife photographers, as does the camera’s extended ISO range. Landscape and wildlife photographers will benefit from the rugged construction and AF system, which is designed to working under changing light conditions. At the “Best Product 2012″ awards, the TIPA judges recognized the EOS-1D X auto-focus system as “the fastest, most accurate auto-focus ever.” To serve the needs of professional news, sports and wildlife photographers, Canon has designed the EOS-1D X to function extremely well in low-light situations. Videographers and filmmakers will benefit from the EOS-1D X’s new HD formats that simplify post-production.

For photographers who want to work with creative lighting techniques, Canon has introduced the Speedlite 600EX-RT flash. The greatest benefit of this unit is its capacity to be radio controlled up to 30 meters. This design overcomes the issues of Canon’s infrared units that require direct line-of-sight with the equipment and have limited maximum ranges. This flash unit was designed to meet the requirements of wedding photography and photojournalism, but works well in a variety of shooting environments and weather conditions.
More products to expect from Canon
Later this year, Canon will be releasing their first mirror-less cameras in 14MP and 24MP models, along with three to five compatible lenses. Professional photographers can look forward to the release of the Canon 70D and 7D Mark II.
