Never really tried IR shooting before.. It looks pretty amazing. I should get myself an IR filter.

There are 2 ways of doing it. One is to spend money modifying your sensor to capture IR. But after that, your camera can only take IR. But as you can see, the effects are better (IMO). Some purchase an older model, like the D40 and modify that older body.
The other way is to use an IR filter. IR filters block out visible light. Means that you will be looking at darkness (perhaps a small dull red spot) on your viewfinder. Make sure you AF and compose properly before putting on your IR filter. That also naturally means it's tripod mounted.

You mentioned Canon. Canon DSLRs have a very strong Anti-Aliasing filter in the sensor. That means that, compared to Nikon, your exposure times for IR will be much longer. That means in minutes. So, if the wind is strong, your leaves and clouds are going to turn out very blurred. Bad, bad, bad, bad. So pick the right scene at the right time. I doubt you will find IR photography as spontaneous and quick like events.

This last point is a personal observation using IR filters - not backed by reasons yet. I find that my IR photos turn out best when taken in mid-day, really hot and the sun is high in the sky. I took my little guilin shots in the morning, and it was a wasted trip. But watch it, too much sun and the shots give a spot in the centre of the frame.

Can try Sony F-717 for IR photography, this cam no need modification to shot IR coz can capture IR using night shot mode with IR filter.
The exposure time is around 1/60 which is much better than other camera if using IR filter.
My photo above is using Sony F-717 with R72 + ND8.

For post processing using this cam is different, can check on below link
