Suggestions for using Polarising Filter or ND Filter on Tokina 11-16mm

    Dear All,

This is my very first post in mopsg. I would be very glad to receive the feedback/suggestion on this question.

Suggestions for using Circular Poliarising Filter or Graduated ND Filter on Tokina 11-16mm

    Firstly,
I haven't bought UWA Tokina Lens. However, very seriously thinking of getting one for my D5100.
My main purpose of adding on filter is for landscape, seascape & waterfall. I've seen some fabulous shots taken with GND filters on UWA lenses.

If anyone has experience with Tokina 11-16mm (77mm filter) on crop sensor, what type of CPL or GND are the best fit?

I did some google but, there are mixed results and most people saying that CPL will give uneven effect on blue sky and so on.

    Thanks all in advance.

For CPL,the XS-Pro B+W CPL will do.Heard that the F-Pro will cause vignetting(Dark corners).Alternatively, you can consider getting a Hoya HD CPL if you find B+W too expensive

First of all you must understand how CPL works, it basically removes all light rays that dont pass through the very microscopic gradated surface of the CPL paralel, thus allowing you to shoot through reflections. The reason why the sky may end up in different shades of blue is because of the angle in which you are shooting the sky. Same with reflections, you will very rarely be able to cut through the reflections of the whole water surface at the same time because only a certain part of the water surface reflects light though your CPL at a certain angle allowing you to see through its reflections. (: dont think this is very scientific but its just my very basic understanding.

CPLs are meant for reducing glare and reflections on surfaces even though some use it as a GND or ND as a subpurpose. I would recommend you get ND or GND filters for you lens as it will serve its job better. A good set to start with is the cokin P series filter system. You could order the whole set of more than 10 filters including GND, ND, and other colored filters at less than a 80USD on amazon.

Thanks, both Cleon & MLP for suggestion/advice. At least, I have some idea which one to approach when I buy the lens.
